Yay!

I've finally found a use for this blog that may actually get semi regular updates. Until further notice, I will use this as a painting dairy of sorts. I'll have step by step posts, with pictures and explanations of what went into it. I'll also post pictures of older mini's I have painted, showing how I've evolved over the years.

Here we go...

Devotee Malicant (Games-Workshop, 54mm), Part One

So I've finally started painting again. I didn't realize how much I missed the little things. The smell of superglue, the multicolored hands, the frustration of trying to paint eyes. It's all coming back.

It's been a good three years since I've painted. The last mini's I completed are probably in some New Zealand landfill right now. This isn't much of a problem, though, as it seems I get better in my inactivity. Every break I have taken, I have come back better. Odd, but it works for me.

Anyway, the Mini:



This is Devotee Malicant. A larger mini, being on the 54mm (Inquisitor) scale, it is roughly twice the size of my normal minis. Some of the first mini's I ever painted were a gang of Redemptionists for the Games-Workshop game Necromunda (I miss you). I just love their story, being fanatics that see sin and heresy in everyone, and the only solution is to purge by blood and flame. I find it fitting to enter painting again with a Redemptionist like Malicant here.

So far I've just assembled it, which was a PAIN, gave it a white undercoat, and did the skin.

During assembly, the hands and arms never fit quite right, so I had to use some putty to fill in the gaps. I also broke off a bit of detail on the front, at the end of the rope, and lost the piece, so I dug through my box of minis and found a replacement. One good thing about these....you can almost never screw up too much.

On the skin, I wanted him to be a bit darker, maybe unwashed, so I started with a Plague Brown base (I use Vallejo Game Color, btw). I like it, but next time I will start with a Cobra Leather base. After I covered with the Plague Brown, I mixed in some Bronze Flesh, and worked the highlights all the way up to a Bronzed Flesh/Elf Skintone/Skull White mix. About 8-10 layers in all. I also used a bit of ink, to get the really deep creases, and do some blacklining (a line to separate different parts, like the wrist to the bracer), but I don't like how messy inks are, so I'll try other stuff in the future.

The face gave me problems. I had to get used to being delicate with the brushes again, and I messed up some highlights, so I redid it. Also, the eyes....I hate eyes. They are certainly my problem spot with painting. I don't know about the eyes on this guy, but I figure I'll do the rest, and come back if they stand out too much.

Overall a good first day back to painting. Next step will be his underclothes, and bits of his robe. Stay tuned.
